What if my toddler won’t cooperate during our family photoshoot?
Worried your toddler won’t sit still, smile or cooperate during your family photoshoot? Good news, they don’t need to. Here’s what really happens when toddlers are allowed to be toddlers.
If you’re thinking about booking a family photoshoot but there’s one thing putting you off, YOUR TODDLER, you’re definitely not the only one.
I hear versions of the same worry all the time:
“They won’t sit still.”
“They hate having their photo taken.”
“They definitely won’t smile when you ask them to.”
“They can be really shy with new people.”
The good news is, I’m not expecting them to do any of those things.
During my outdoor family sessions, your child doesn’t need to sit nicely, look at my camera or smile on command. In fact, I’d much rather they didn’t spend the whole session doing that.
Your toddler doesn't need to sit still
Toddlers are quite spectacularly bad at sitting still when someone asks them to.
So I don't build my sessions around expecting them to.
We'll explore, play games, run through the grass, have cuddles, chase Mum and Dad and generally let your child move around. I'll give you little prompts along the way, but there's no pressure for your toddler to perform for the camera.
Some of my favourite photographs happen in the moments between the things we were supposedly doing anyway.
And if your toddler decides we're going in a completely different direction?
Quite often, I'll follow them.
What if my child is shy?
That's completely fine too.
Some children are ready to play with me within about thirty seconds. Others would quite reasonably like to establish who this strange woman with a camera is before getting involved.
I won't expect your child to interact with me straight away.
They can stay close to you, have a cuddle, explore the location or simply watch what's going on for a while. I'll usually start photographing from a little further away and let them get used to having me around.
There's no rush.
Often the best thing we can do with a child who needs time to warm up is simply give them the time.
And what if they're the complete opposite of shy?
Excellent. 😂
If your child wants to run, climb, explore and investigate absolutely everything except the thing we had planned, we can work with that too.
Outdoor family sessions give children space to move. Instead of constantly asking them to come back, sit down or look at me, I can use that movement to create photographs that actually feel like them.
Running towards Dad. Being swung around by Mum. Racing through long grass. Playing hide and seek. Looking for bugs.
That's all photographable.
They don't have to stop being a toddler for me to take beautiful photographs of them.
But I would still like one photo of everyone looking at the camera...
Of course.
Child-led photography doesn't mean I'm going to leap into a hedge if somebody looks directly at my lens.
We'll absolutely try to get a few photographs of everyone together and looking towards me.
The difference is that we aren't going to spend the entire session fighting for that photograph.
If your toddler gives me three seconds of eye contact before running off again, that's often all I need.
Then they can get back to the important business of being two.
What if they're just not having it?
Sometimes children are tired. Sometimes they're hungry. Sometimes they've fallen asleep in the car for precisely seven minutes and somehow emerged with the temperament of a tiny dictator.
It happens.
We can stop for a snack. Have a cuddle. Change what we're doing. Let them explore for a while. Move somewhere else. Or simply take the pressure off completely.
And if they need Mum or Dad for most of the session, that's okay too.
A toddler buried in Mum's shoulder isn't necessarily a photoshoot going wrong. It might become a photograph of the way they curl into you when they need comfort, something you may actually want to remember when they're much bigger.
You don't need to make your child behave for me
This is probably the biggest thing I want parents to know before their session.
It isn't your job to make your toddler perform for my camera.
You don't need to spend the hour saying “look at the lady,” “smile,” “come back,” or “just one nice photo!”
Come and play with them instead.
I'll worry about the photographs.
My outdoor family sessions take place around Worcester, Worcestershire and the surrounding areas and are designed to be relaxed, playful and led by your family rather than a list of poses.

A Family Day Out at Eastnor Castle: Our Honest Review
Discover why Eastnor Castle is one of our favourite family days out near Worcester. From the adventure playground and beautiful grounds to seasonal events, here's everything you need to know before you visit.
We visited Eastnor Castle with our toddler during the Steam & Vintage Rally, and it turned out to be one of those places that had something for everyone. He spent most of his time climbing around the playground, while we enjoyed wandering through the beautiful grounds and watching the historic steam engines in action. If you're wondering whether Eastnor Castle is worth visiting with young children, here's our honest experience.
Location
Eastnor Castle, Eastnor, Nr Ledbury, Herefordshire, HR8 1RL
Eastnor Castle is located just outside the market town of Ledbury in Herefordshire, surrounded by the beautiful Malvern Hills. It's an easy drive from Worcester, Malvern and Hereford, making it a great option for a family day out.
Parking was straightforward, with plenty of spaces available when we visited. From the car park, it's just a short walk to the entrance and castle grounds. We found it easy enough to manage with a toddler, and there was no long trek before the day even began. We did bring a pram, which I would recommend, but please note that sometimes it does require doing a detour to follow the accessible paths around the grounds.
What we Loved
One of the first things that struck us was just how beautiful the grounds are. Everywhere you look there's another view worth stopping for, whether it's the castle reflected in the lake, the sweeping lawns or the mature trees surrounding the estate. It was incredibly peaceful and well kept. Plenty of space for our toddler to run around and to spend time outdoors.
What’s On
They have various special events throughout the summer. We attended during the Eastnor Steam & Vintage show, which was definitely worth seeing. During our visit they had a band, activities for the kids, various different steam engines and lots more happening. My toddler was entertained and kept busy the entire time we were there.
The Grounds
One of our favourite parts of Eastnor Castle was simply wandering around the grounds. There are wide open lawns, peaceful lake and beautiful views in almost every direction, making it just as enjoyable for adults as it is for children. There’s a beautiful walk to do around the lake where you can see lots of ducks and geese. When we went we were lucky enough to see quite a few goslings.
Charlie loved having the freedom to explore, while we enjoyed taking in the scenery. It's one of those places where you don't feel rushed, there are plenty of benches, picnic spots and quiet corners to stop and soak it all in.
If you enjoy photography, don't forget to bring your camera. The castle, surrounding woodland and lakes provide countless opportunities for beautiful photos throughout the year.
The Adventure Playground
The adventure playground was undoubtedly the highlight of the day for our toddler. There was plenty to climb, explore and keep him entertained, and it caters for a wide range of ages.
We ended up spending much longer here than we'd expected, and it was lovely to see children of all ages enjoying the space. There are benches nearby for parents, making it easy to sit back for a few minutes while the little ones burn off some energy.
If you're visiting with toddlers or young children, I'd definitely recommend allowing plenty of time here, it could easily become the main event of your day.
We didn’t have a chance to do everything as there’s so much to do. But the playground was definitely a hit with my toddler. There’s also load more activities for slightly older children that we look forward to trying in the future.
Practical Information
Allow at least half a day (or a full day if you're visiting during an event).
Wear comfortable shoes.
Bring a picnic or make use of the café.

We'd happily return to Eastnor Castle. Between the beautiful grounds, fantastic playground and ever-changing calendar of events, it's a place that offers something for the whole family. Whether you're visiting for a special event or simply looking for a relaxing day outdoors, it's well worth adding to your list.
We'd love to visit again in another season to see how the estate changes throughout the year.

Inside a Holding Mumma Event: Supporting Mothers Across the Cotswolds
Holding Mumma Event
One of the things I wish more people talked about when becoming a parent is how important community is.
As wonderful as motherhood can be, it can also feel isolating at times. Having other parents around who understand what you're going through can make a huge difference.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a Holding Mumma event in Stroud as the event photographer, capturing the connections, conversations and moments shared throughout the morning.
What is Holding Mumma?
Holding Mumma is a community created to support mothers through pregnancy, postpartum and beyond.
With events held across the Cotswolds and surrounding areas, Holding Mumma brings together women at all stages of motherhood, creating a welcoming space where mums can connect, share experiences and build friendships.
Whether you're expecting your first baby, adjusting to life with a newborn or navigating the challenges of raising young children, these events offer an opportunity to meet other local mums who truly understand the realities of parenthood.
My Experience at the Stroud Event
One of the things that stood out to me was how thoughtfully the event had been put together.
Alongside the opportunity for mums to connect with one another, there were local businesses and professionals there to support families throughout the morning. Tractor Tots Gloucestershire provided a fantastic play setup for the little ones, giving toddlers plenty to explore while mums enjoyed some time to chat and relax.
Grace from Cotswold Lactation Consultant was also on hand throughout the event, offering support and reassurance around breastfeeding, bottle feeding, combination feeding and weaning. It was lovely to see mums able to ask questions in such an informal and welcoming environment.
Mums were even treated to relaxing hand massages during the morning, creating a rare opportunity to slow down and enjoy a moment of self-care. As any parent knows, finding time for yourself can be difficult, so it was lovely to see those small moments of relaxation woven into the event.
By the end of the morning, many of the women who had arrived not knowing anyone were chatting like old friends. There were babies being cuddled, toddlers playing together, conversations flowing over hot drinks and a genuine sense of support throughout the room.
What struck me most was how much courage it can take to walk into a room full of strangers as a new mum. Yet within a couple of hours, the atmosphere had completely transformed. Watching those connections form was probably my favourite part of the day.
